Capalbio

The Maremma’s last town on the border with Lazio is self-contained. It’s a favourite with foreign tourists, who come for the culture and the art and the amazing beaches that are just a few kilometres from the shore.

Capalbio has its own sophistication and two very popular international film and art festivals that infuse it with an almost Cannes-like vibe, if only for a short amount of time.

During the rest of the year, Capalbio lives for its walls. The town is almost entirely surrounded by its original walls.

plenty of awards from the environmental group Legambiente and the Italian Touring Club.

DA NON PERDERE:

Palazzo Collacchioni

One of the only palazzos in the Maremma that feels lived.

Built over the town castle, this sumptuous home was bought and renovated by an Italian minister in the 19th century.

Today it is possible to visit the palace, admiring what remains of the original frescoes, the furnishings, and the grand piano, played by none other than Giacomo Puccini.

Giardino dei Tarocchi

A living, breathing work of art, this garden was created by English-French artist Niki de Saint Phalle.

Inside are huge statues representing the 22 tarot cards and which catch the sunlight with their thousands and thousands of brightly coloured mosaics.

Beaches

Capalbio has its fair share of beautiful beaches.

The stand out and local favourite is called l’Ultima Spiaggia and it’s a few kilometres from the town centre.

In questa parte della costa, l’acqua è sempre calma, potrete quindi immergervi tranquillamente in queste splendide acque della costa tirrenica, la sabbia è sottile e pulitissima, la gente del luogo è infatti molto attenta alla cura dell’ambiente.
